It’s coming into holiday time and the stores are all fully stocked with items on sale that you can stock up on. Many of these items are not “life and death” preps, but rather “comfort foods”. That’s ok, I’ll take any item I use that the store puts on sale!
When I buy food for sotrage, I think aobut 1) can I live without it 2) do I want to live without it 3)could I get it if the trucks stopped bringing it to the shelves.
This means that IF a big emergency came a long, would that item be available locally or would it be hard to get. Sugar can’t be grown locally for me, neither can exotic spices and many other baking ingredients. That makes them meet two out of three on my list of priorities above.
Everyone knows what comfort foods are…cookies, hot chocolate, a bit of chocolate candy. Right now, these are on sale, so take advantage! Below are some of the basics you might want to stock up on:
Sugar- (white, brown and powdered)Will last indefinetely.
Flour- Will last several years if properly stored.
Vanilla – will last unopened for years.
Baking powder – long lasting! vacuum seal half the container.
Shortening – will last 5 years unopened. (everything takes shortening with baking it
Chocolate- will last for at least 5 years if vacuum packed. Chocolate prices were
going up last I heard, so I’m stocking up.
Coconut-I vacuum pack it and it’s lasted 5 yrs so far.
Hot Chocolate – I also get baking cocoa and it has lasted for 7 yrs so far. I
vacuum pack the opened cans and have had no issues.
I’m sure you can all add the special ingredients that you like to use in baking. The one thing that I don’t reccommend is storing shelled and roasted nuts. They seem to go rancid pretty fast. I’m sure that whole nuts can be kept in the freezer for a long time, but since many in my family aren’t nut fans, I don’t worry about it. I do try and keep a lot of peanut butter around for both baking and regular eating.
Please, feel free to add to the list above in the comment section!
