The Free Dictionary defines “self-sufficient” as the ability to provide for oneself without the help of others. Self-sufficiency has become a growing trend in both rural and urban settings with people growing their own food, collecting their own water and raising their own meat sources. There are many reasons for one to practice self-sufficiency, whether it be for the sake of saving money, being prepared for natural disasters or just for the sake of knowing where your food comes from.
Whatever reason you have for wanting to be self-sufficient I want to give you some tips for being able to do so. Here is where you should start:
Take an inventory of the skills you have and the skills you will need so that you can be self-sufficient. For instance, do you have the knowledge and skills it takes to take care of the maintenance for your vehicle or vehicles? Do you know how to garden and take care of livestock? This is where you are going to want to start before you dive head first into a self-sufficient life-style.
Take classes and read books to acquire these certain skills that you’ll need. Wikihow and Ask.com are great resource for learning how to do certain things.
If you want to be self-sufficient then there is some equipment that you are going to need so as to take care of yourself and your household. Items such as tools so you can repair your house as needed, durable kitchen equipment such as good pots and pans that will last. Also consider investing in canning jars so that you can store food for a long amount of time and have a stockpile during winter and other hard times.
Storage should also be considered when it comes to equipment. You want your stuff to be accessible but not to thieves. Consider investing in an underground bunker. These are great for storing your equipment as well as food.
Being healthy is the most important thing to consider in any scenario. The best way to make sure you stay healthy and avoid costly doctor visits is to stay in shape both mentally and physically by eating right and exercising daily.
Most illness is caused by what we eat, so if you are being self-sufficient and only eating what you grow or raise then your health and immune system will be boosted far beyond most people who eat genetically modified foods from the store. But eating healthy is only half the battle when it comes to health, you also have to make sure you stay active. Exercising isn’t only good for your physical health but also for your mental health because when you exercise endorphins are released in your body that will actually make you feel happier.
Though self-sufficiency has become more popular recently, it isn’t just a trend, it is a way of life that people are embracing because of the freedom it gives them from having to depend on others. When you are self-sufficient you have the freedom to truly live happy and healthy knowing that you are free from being dependent on others and certain systems that you had to rely on before like grocery stores or automotive shops. Self-sufficiency is freedom.
