I had a week of vacation coming up, so I took it camping. I made some subtractions in removing the handgun and 4 clips. I added the weight back with a new takedown fishing rod and reel. Plus I was looking to do some fishing with it.
Why not actually do the hike? Private property, Posted land, busy roads, nosey people. Was bad enough when I biked it in one day.
Task: Hiking to simulate bugging out.
Every morning after an MRE I left the campsite and went out 6 miles on hiking trails. (up and down hills) Then came back 6 miles to the campgrounds by mid-day. Pack was 40lbs. Practiced some compass navigation.
Result: Need more core body strength. Legs were fine. Lower back was less than happy. I need alot more practice with compass navigation.
Task: Test food, water and shelter.
Result: Need Moleskin, in case of blisters. Bigger tube of hydrocortisone. small mirror (check for ticks) Bigger tube of DEET, I think the mosquitoes were big enough to shoot. MRE’s are better than freeze dried. Less prep, more calories. Water filter lifesaver 4000 works well keeping lake water filtered for filling hydration reservoir in my pack. Size is an issue with it though. It is light but bulky. New 18″ square end machete works much better than old hatchet for collecting firewood and is lighter. No problems with tent, however put rag in B.O.B. for wiping down tent before packing. (dew)
Task: What else could I use or discard.
Result: don’t need fishing pole, can reduce some components of clothing, can reduce some components of first aid kit. Need anti-bear spray.
Only downside of this expedition was the fact I had a good time fishing but no mess kit. MRE’s didn’t need it so I didn’t pack it. So no fish for me.
Practice using map and compass.
Different water purification to reduce bulk?
Rag for tent wipe.
Larger tubes of hydrocortisone, DEET.
summer, dump some duplicate clothing items.
reduce quantity in first aid kit.
More abdominal exercises.
Bring a few spices, salt, pepper, chile powder, small amounts.
