I have always been into preparedness, Ever since I was a child I wanted to make sure I was prepared, (which is funny because I never had any reason to be scared. My Husband and I were so sick about the way the world was heading that we became involved in politics. We found that several of the friends we made were as fed up as we were (including two of the candidates – one running for senate and one for sheriff) in a short time we had group of people who were interested in learning how to be self-sufficiant. Over the last year we have held classes in different homes. One was on how to can almost anything, how to make a seed starter cover, holistic medicines, how to raise Belti Beef, as well as a guns and weapons class and learning to shoot at some one’s farm. There are so many other ideas to offer, especially in the areas of where to go for a short term and for a long term bug out safe place, any ideas comments, etc. are welcome. We hope to continue to purchase more goods as well as more weapons. I am Blessed to have a husband who is on the same page and is very involved. The hardest part is being on a fixed income and l!earning what our priorties are. The best way for us to find people was to become involved in a group that seems to understand what is happening with our country.
Thank you American Preppers and their Network for being a leader, and being visable to those who want to be proactive. As we do, the fear of what will happen gets less and less. I live near Owensboro, but am just getting my feet wet with prepping, although I have always been interested in it. I can’t see how people can look at the state of the world today and not feel like they should be preparing for the inevitable.
It’s about time more people start thinking about what life would be like with just a simple disaster. What if an earthquake took out power in your area for a month? What if gas price were to go to $10 a gallon? What if some sort of bacteria infected the food supply?
These could all happen. Most people probably have enough supplies on hand to last maybe a few days then they would be out. That’s not enough people! You should have at least 30 days worth. You should also have protection as when one of these events happen there will be people looking to take your stuff away!

The web site is wwwdotzombiehuntersdotorg. They are all about prepping education and community awareness. There is going to be a meeting on the south side, Homewood area I think, on 3/25. The particulars will be announced as it gets closer I guess. It is being hosted by a member of the Chicago chapter. They have chapters all over the country. Should be very interesting.

Hi Kelley, sounds like we may be neighbors. I have always had an “emergency container” in the event that power went out during summer or winter, Just something to entertain my kids, small radio, etc. but that is minor compare to the prepping I have been reading about. Hi Sherry, I’m in central Pa and am new to this prepping culture. I thought my husband was nuts when he came back from Iraq and started hoarding survival gear, weapons etc. But after seeing more people talk about and do this I started believing in prepping. Last summer I ran into some friends at a church function, that own a local company, and I could not believe they are preppers. I have always been into gardening,aquaponics, seed saving etc, but now I think it’s time to step it up a notch to what we can afford. Good luck in the Philly area!

Just found your blog and so happy I did! We are in a similar sittuaion- my 25 year old daughter is living with us do to her illness (MCAD) and her having multiple severe food allergies- wheat and nuts among them. Even though she is a grown woman- I feel it is still important for me to keep her safe. It takes alot of looking around to find her safe foods- never mind bulk items, but we are finding some. It would be great if you could share more gluten-free tips for prepping- I think they may be helpful for us as well.Mary Ann

Hopefully with the success of doomsday preppers and doomsday bunkers people will wake up and smell the roses. if you think the government is looking out for you go look at the debt clock and think of it as a ticking timebomb. Obama may think we can spend our way out of debt but the people who own Americas debt probably don’t think that way.

Take your food — I encourage you to start thinking about how long you can live scavanging from others. This first off is one of the things that preppers do prepair for. I have plenty of fire arms, while most of them are used to harvest food they are great for home protection. Remember the 12g shotgun is cheep and effective at protecting a home.
Hi Kevin.I am strecthed money wise too.I have what I call a scratch and dent store in my town where they sell very discounted items as they are “damaged” but not really.I find lots of food items there like spices,condiments,rice,cereal,beans,oil and more.I love this store.I buy gravy mixes for 45 cents.I stock up once a month.I watch the coupon sales in the store and only buy what is on sale.We all eat great and I spend very little.It is a big job but if I can do it anybody can.I feed 6 people every day so I go through a lot of food.I store as much as I can.Talk to your friends and neighbors.I have a friend that gave me 50 pounds of apples last year(she raises cows and has an apple orchard) and I made apple butter with them.Lots of work but well worth it.Good Luck!!!

My wife and I are in N.E. Mo, just outside of Quincy,Il. Sad to say the only real prepping I have done concerns arms and ammo. Have a Ham radio, not licensed to use, but we feel the way to communicate when the shit hits the fan is through ham radio.
Kevin, even a .22 put in the right place will discourage the bad guys. I like a cut down .410, just like a .45 Long Colt. except it will fire buckshot too.

I stated that way as well, I recieved my father’s Winchester 30-30 and his .22 short. I’ve taken time starting with buying shotguns and ammo, but am moving to food prepping. one of the best things I’ve found is HyVee will give away, Yep I said Give away 5 gal buckets all you have to do is wash em. Make sure they have a bakery.
I have thought about getting a ham myself, but have not put the money out for it yet. I am reading up on it and doing the research for this as well.
One thing I guess I don’t give myself credit for is how I prep. I hunt every season I’m able and this year have bagged over 150 snow geese and tagged my 3 deer and had 2 more donated to me from a farmer. I never thought about this as a means of prepping. Guess I got caught in the idea of sealing food and storing grains which I have not done as of yet.

People like takeyourfood thrive on causing fear. Just like gangbangers and punks everywhere. In my opinion TYF is in one of those two catagories.
I have been prepping for just a short time, though I have had the belief that TSWHTF for quite a while. I have studied military manuals since the 70s, gleaning all the information I can. I have mainly stockpiled weapons and ammo, BUT have a ham radio also. I’m not licensed, but by that time no one will care.

Preparedness Pro, you are 100% right, when you are talking about peolpe like yourself, myself, and those of us who do prepare and have been preparing for a long time for those very reasons. While I certainly don’t believe that I was taken out of context, there was more to the discussion that wasn’t printed. We were talking about the growing number of newbies who are just now getting into preparedness and latching on to this new term “prepper” These are the peolpe who for the longest time have not even considered getting prepared, but now all of a sudden are. I was asked if I thought it was a movement, well a movement is something that you “make” happen. These newcomers aren’t doing this to be pro-active either or they would have seen the signs a long time ago, they are reacting to the current economic collapse and the increased disasters. These are newcomers that will soon outnumber us in the world of preparedness and it is up to those of us who have been preparing much longer to help them along and share all that we know. Thanks for stopping in, you are right, I don’t need the collapse to tell me to prepare either.

I live in a small place and have been reducing and liinvg on less for years. No cable tv and down to on 3 money bills I pay even this is tough and I could live more comfortably but being prepared and ready is my priority especially the area I am liinvg in So Cal. The difficult part would be to add a wife in the equation. Women just seem to have so many must have expenses they will not let go such as having hair, nails, and so on they can’t live without and they say it is to make them pretty for you. Great article – nice link to this weitbse – first time I’ve been here. I’ve been becoming a prepper (as opposed to a preppie, which I’ve been for 30 years now!) over the last 6 months. Two 6 ft. shelves in our basement now of dry/canned goods/water/charcoal/basic medical supplies. However, we don’t own a gun or have our own generator yet – and somehow can NEVER find a flashlight when we need one! If nothing else, it’s nice to just be able to send the kids down for something when I’m making dinner and need an extra can of tomatoes. My brother/mother are preppers too!

Takeyourfood is very serious so u must me also. If you’ve never killed a human Don’t i repeat don’t talk big about how your going to defend youself and your loved ones YOU WILL DIE.
The bad guy has a different mentality then you unless your ready to walk up to someone WTSHTF and just pull the trigger then your a DEAD MAN cause they will cause the prie is to good to pass up YOUR ammo YOUR guns YOUR FOOD YOUR women… If you really think you canjust pull the trigger you have to be fast very fast cause the bad guy will not hesitate but you will. So go inot the woods and the first animal you see don’t hesitate just blow it away 8 out of 10 will either hesitate or not pull the trigger. Don’t think for an instant that it will be easy it’s not it will go against everything you’ve been taught all your life. fourty years have gone by and I still see the faces. The only thing besides blowing bambi away that i can tell you to do is practice your draw and dry fire always so when the time comes god will that is what you will do first. if and when the shtf never let a stranger or an uninvited friend enter your property or house w/o being search and never let a stranger even close to your house unless he/she will not be walking away. Always greet if you have to someone with a weapon in your hands ready to fire. always have someone watch your back. good luck my friends

I started prepping back in 2010 and I love it. I remember when I was a kid, my Great Grandparents always had food stored and were prepared. The grew up during the great depression. The learned to live a more prudent life style. Americans are returning to that lifestyle! This is good… thanks for all you do to help us!
Beau, I wish I could say that I love prepping. About a month ago, on 3 different occasions, 3 people who don’t know each other talked to me about prepping. It seemed odd, because I hadn’t heard of it. In addition to seeming a little strange, it also seemed providential; I guess I saw the hand-writing on the wall. So, I’ve been studying, researching, making lists, shopping sales, ordering, buying by the case, dehydrating, etc. etc. I cleaned up an area in the cellar and put up shelves. I’m prepping for 7 adults and one small child. The family says that if I want to do it, that’s ok, but they are “too busy” to help me. I’m starting out with (hopefully) a 3 month supply. It’s a lot of work. I have to keep telling myself that I’m doing it for my family, because I don’t really enjoy buying by bulk, lugging it out to my car, then lugging it inside and down the cellar stairs, then hoisting it to the shelves, and keeping records on the inventory. And because I don’t want to go public with it, I don’t have anyone to talk to. I know, I should have some cheese with that whine. Sigh.
I thought the Survival Mom did a great job. I can’t say that enuogh. However I was disturbed by your quote that preparedness was a “reaction as opposed to a movement.” Every step of preparedness that I have taken has been rooted in obedience. All could be completely well with the world and I would still prepare as I have because I proactively–not reactively–read and study the scriptures. They are very, very clear that we need to be prepared. Wall Street, Fannie Mae, my local bank or grocery store doen’t dictate my preparedness efforts. The undeniable and undisputed word of the Lord tells me to get prepared.
I am in MT.Have knowledge of gardening,cooking,some preserving,fishing,hunting and access to a water source.Better off than most people in big cities(Denver,Chicago ect.)Mt is a good place to be.Been stocking up on food storage,bedding,warm clothes.Need to better my medical supplies,defense,and storage.I dot have enough.Luck To All!!!
I have just recently joined a nice group around Cedar Lake, Indiana, there are also groups in Southern Ilinois. What is wrong with you people don’t you have computers? Just go on Search for say Survival groups of So. Ill., Indiana etc. they are many group out there looking for new members..
