The U.S. ranks number one in the world for the largest prison population. 25% of the world’s prisoners live right here in our great land of liberty. That’s staggering! In America, even as crime decreases, prison populations continue to increase. Look around at all of your friends and neighbors…how many would you consider to be “bad people” deserving of prison time?
U.S. incarceration rate second only to North Korea
So we’re a big country with lots of people. One would expect America to have quite a few prisoners just based on our overall population, right? But even when you count the numbers of prisoners per 100,000 people, the U.S. still comes in second only to North Korea. America’s incarceration rate is second only to the worlds most despotic society. Now ask yourself, is that something to be proud of?
Before you go off with some ridiculous comment like “If you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime”, first consider the profit motive and monopolistic private enterprise that has evolved around the prison industry…Yes, it’s called the prison “industry” Do you smell a rat yet?
So how free are we, and are private prisons really to blame? Well most prisoners are in jail for victim-less crimes (you know those morally reprehensible activities that are arbitrarily decided to be wrong just because some people feel ‘in their opinion’ that they are wrong and wanted to pass laws against them). Imagine the snoopy lady across the street who doesn’t like the way your cars are parked….multiplied by several million voters.
Well, in a Republic you get the government you deserve. So next time you complain about some activity that you enjoy that was recently made illegal, take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror and reflect on what activities you observed others doing and said to yourself: “They should pass a law against that”
Be careful what you ask for, you might get it.
We, through our elected officials, are enslaving ourselves with our ridiculous laws. Private prison corporations are merely responding to market demand.
